Country Doctor Community Clinic logoSomething interesting happened in 1968 in Seattle’s Central District. The Black Panthers being committed to the health of African American families started the Sidney Miller Family Services Center. One of their programs was the Sydney Miller Free Clinic.

Three years later Boeing hit hard times. Some thought Seattle circled the drain and asked “Would the last one out of Seattle please turn off the lights?” Many left Seattle seeking greener pastures. During this time Country Doctor Community Clinic was established in a vacant firehouse on Capitol Hill. As was the Sydney Miller Free Clinic, Country Doctor Community Clinic was a volunteer project. Unpaid staff worked paying jobs during the day and opened the clinic at night.

In 1988 the two organizations merged but continue to offer services at both sites. Country Doctor Community Clinic provides over 50,000 medical visits to more than 16,000 patients each year. In caring atmospheres, physicians provide everything from primary health care to on-going treatment for chronic conditions at these locations:

10 Things You Should Know About Country Doctor Community Health Centers

  1. For 35 years, we have offered health care to all those in need - from expectant mothers and newborns to seniors.
  2. No one is turned away because they cannot afford to pay for their care. 59% of patients are uninsured; fees are based on a sliding scale depending on income and family size.
  3. Patients may choose to see the same provider during return visits.
  4. Our staff can help eligible patients sign up for Medicaid & Basic Health Plan. Most insurance plans, Medicaid and Medicare and accepted.
  5. Both clinic sites offer the same services during flexible hours; evening and weekend appointment are available.
  6. Patients with medical needs that require a specialist can be referred to those committed to helping our patients.
  7. Our Family Practice physicians deliver patients’ babies at Swedish Medical Center.
  8. We welcome new patients from Seattle/King County and surrounding communities.
  9. Our physicians are Board Certified; we have been accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Organizations (JCAHO) since 1998.
  10. Country Doctor Community Health Centers is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We provide nearly $500,000 in free care each year; private donations are always urgently needed.
